@zacq: Hard to say, there are so many programs. I would highly recommend using Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator as they are the most versatile. I think illustrator is the easier of the two to learn and will create scalable (vector) graphics that will look good whether on a billboard or a business card.. which is ideal.

@Zacq: Generally Blue/Black/Green all work together and appeal to all audiences, just make sure to stay with soft tones rather than bold or hard tones, as they are more appealing to larger audiences. As far as shape goes.. make a list of words that represent your business and then translate those words into shapes. Heres something to get you started:

phone, communication, people, talking > clouds, talking bubbles, towers, signal strength, bars, rings, satellite, radio
