Facebook PhoneBook

When I first heard the name “Facebook” a few years back, the brand immediately triggered the thought of a visual phone book. When I discovered that Facebook was something more than just a phonebook, however, I soon forgot that the thought ever even crossed my mind.. until today.

I signed into facebook today to start my projects for the day (I’m a facebook developer, mind you) but before I dive right in, I like to check out the facebook stream and see how my friends are doing. I’m quite used to facebook changing things around on me, but when I saw a status that said Facebook was publishing phone numbers, I thought it had to be fake.

Turns out, I find out from a friend that facebook privacy is once again an issue rather than getting a notice from Facebook. All you have to do is go to Account > Edit Friends > PhoneBook and see it for yourself.

Facebook Phonebook Privacy

Considering the fact that they’ve received flack about privacy since day one, you’d think this would be something that they’d take a little bit more seriously and notify users of. What do you think? Is facebook overstepping and shorting us by lack of notice, or do people not care?

In my opinion, we really shouldn’t publish our personal infor on sites like these. We never know what could happen.

The phonebook feature has been available since I joined the week it went public. If you install the Facebook for Android app you can also add a folder of your Facebook Friends’ phone numbers to your home screen on your phone.

The link to the Phonebook is now more conspicuous since its directly on the Friends page but previously, you could just hitup http://facebook.com/phonebook.php to see the phone numbers of your friends. But when they did the latest homepage redesign that feature was removed and wasn’t added again until recently (and they changed the URL)

You just gotta love Facebook. For many it’s a can’t live with it, can’t live without it. I would think with FB already more or less the number 1 destination on the web they’d be on their Ps and Qs as far as privacy matters but then again there’s another school of thought on this. I’ve been hearing similiar concerns about this from other facebook developers but Controversy sells, or at least that’s what I’ve heard over the years. I don’t see how this could bolster FB, probably does more hurt than help but who knows. If sex sells and controversy sells, well, it could be a positive rather than a negative. If nothing else, it keeps them in the News.
