My Dell Vostro 1500 Hackintosh

It’s not my first Hackintosh, nor will it be my last. But either way I believe it’s practice to post struggles and successes online so that others can learn and use that knowledge. For those of you that google iAtkos v4i , iAtkos 10.5.4 , Leopard, OSx86 project, Dell Vostro 1500, GMA x3100, GMAX3100 on dell, laptop, install, intel 950. I’m here to help…

So installing OS X on a laptop isn’t anything new, and most are finding the rewards well worth the time and effort it takes to install. This is my second successful install on a dell (with the previous being a Dell m1330) and has been far easier.

My hardware is as follows:

  • 1.6 GHz with 1G RAM
  • Broadcom 440x ethernet
  • Intel 3945 a/b/g Wireless
  • Intel 965 Express Graphics
  • Sigmatel Audio 95xx Audio

I’m going to keep this brief and to the point, but if anyone has any questions, feel free to post them here and I’ll answer as best as I can, or check out this thread with a step by step guide.

First, get the iAtkos v4i dvd. I installed with just the vanilla kernel (9.4.0) and ethernet (broadcom 440x) installed on installation. Once installed I had to boot with -x (safemode) flag to get video to work on internal monitor. I then deleted the AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext from system/library/extensions which allowed me to boot without safe mode. .

I then downloaded the DellPackage and installed the audio for Sigmatel 9205 (works with Dell Vostro 1700 also), the video for Intel 950, AppleSMBIOS for Macbook (this is key for stuff like Creative Suite and other programs to install and behave properly) and then the Media Keys Enabler.

So now everything is working on my Dell Vostro 1500 except internal wireless, which could be a while before that’s working. That’s all i really have to report for now. I hope that it helps someone, feel free to hit me up and tell me your struggles and successes or if this post helped you (if i get a decent amount of feedback I may start helping others and investing more time into building/supporting Hackintosh and the osx86 project.

  • aalloo

How do you install the graphics, I only get 1024*768 resolution. I have a same laptop as yours.
    Thanks

  • admin

Are you able to boot normally? I had to delete the AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext first to get to boot up normally.. then i downloaded that Dell Package and got the Intel 950 kext to work to get native resolution. If that doesn’t work try the other one.. I’ve heard some people will have the GMAX3100 graphics even though the info on their computer says 965 Express Chipset. So try installing the 950 first.. if that doesn’t work, delete it and try installing the 3100. If that doesn’t work delete that too and let me know and i can work with you further. You may have to reboot a few times to get this to work as well. Mine is a little tricky. At times my desktop wont show up and at times it will just stop working (not very often but nothing i know of is triggering). If you have these issues repair disk permissions using disk utility or boot in safe mode with messages (-x -v)

  • kensuke155

I install but get a “Chain booting error”. What options did you select in the “Customize” menu? are you dual booting? What does your boot configuration look like?

  • Darnell

Thank you for the article.. Worked great on a Vostro 1500 1.8Ghz w/ Nvidia 8400M video fully accelerated!! Network and everything else is perfect!

    Good piece.

    Greatings,
Not sure that this is true:), but thanks for a post.

    Thank you

  • mad house

Iv installed the gm950 on my vostro, did disk perm repair then i restarted. Boots up to blue screen then black. How to fix that? If boot with -v -x, i still get black screen

  • Mayne

Did you tweak ur dell vostro 1500 bios?

  • http://thinkclay.com Clay McIlrath

@Mad house – try removing all GMAX kexts and then booting with -v -x flags.. the vanilla video drivers will at least get you 1024 x 768 resolution and you can go from there

@Mayne – I only changed the ATA mode to standard SATA instead of AHCI mode.. I haven’t found a way to make ACHI mode work yet

To everyone else, I stopped messing with the hackintosh on my Dell Vostro 1500, and simply purchased a Macbook Pro, therefore I will be offering less support (mainly because I’m beginning to forget what kext to modify or how to fix bugs). The hackintosh is a Win 7 machine now, which runs amazingly.

My advice.. play and have fun with making a hackintosh, but don’t rely on it as a main system. Mine would randomly crash for no reason, and you’ll find yourself having to do annoying permission repairs everytime you install a program and such.

Mac’s are totally worth the money, and you can get them at a reasonable price if you look long and hard on craigslist. I got a Macbook Pro for $800 with 1 year warranty left on it still. If I were to buy this same machine, it would cost me $2100.. just keep your eyes open, mac users often upgrade and sell their older systems for cheap!

  • Mayne

Ill reinstall and remove all GMAX.kext. Then ill install the DellPackage. Ill post the out come of it. (Getting frustrated with the no smoking sign when trying to boot iatkos 10.5.5 dvd. – maybe im using a cheap disk lol)

  • Mayne

Ok. Iv finished reinstalling my hackintosh; then it goes to a blue screen then black. How can I remove the gma.kext in another method? (-x, -x -v, -f, -v -x does not work)

  • http://thinkclay.com Clay McIlrath

Best way to remove kexts is to boot with a Ubuntu live CD or the Mac cd and get into terminal and remove them. Also, I never used iAtkos v5i disk.. I couldn’t get it to work either, use iAtkos v4, then once you have that working, you can use the dell installer to make upgrades compatible.

  • Mayne

Hey Clay…did you get the full resolution on your dell vostro?

  • http://chosendevelopment.com Clay McIlrath

yeah i did, but i had to delete the other kexts and then replace them with the intel 950 kexts that are included in the dell package. The weird thing about it is the new package had some issues with it, but the old one (beta i believe) didn’t. If you cant get them working try the older dell package and install the vid kexts from that. You will need to remove all of the GMAX 3100 kexts too. I just booted into safe mode, deteled everything with GMAX in it and then installed the new kexts, repaired permissions and reboot and works fine.

  • Mayne

Hmmm. iatkos 10.5.5 is a no no for the vostro 1500 with intel video card. Im downloading the 10.5.4 and update you with what i get. Thanks.

  • http://chosendevelopment.com Clay McIlrath

Yeah i kinda figured that out too.. I had a hard time getting iAtkos v5i to install correctly. Not sure what the issue is. I just stick with what i did get working perfect: v4i with the dell package to safely update to 10.5.5

Good luck and keep me posted

  • Mayne

    REALLY…to 10.5.5??!! Everything working??

  • Thirdshift

I got 10.5.5 to install last night. I had to use iatkos v4i to install Darwin bootloader then pop in v5i and, press f8 and type vanilla so it boots w/ vanilla kernel. Once inside I picked what I needed and very important to remove acpipowermanagementbundle in customize. After that I got the black screen but I used the same trick from V4i and unplugged my power for 12 mins and popped it back in, hit a key and screen came back on. keyboard and trackpad did not work because I did not pick it under customize. Dell post installer screwed it up so I’m reinstalling again.

  • Mayne

Can the resolution be higher than 1024×768?

  • Mayne

*************IATKOS 10.5.5 SUCCESSFUL ON DELL VOSTRO 1500 (intet GM965 Chipset) ****************************

Install leopard on your lappy and select your packages. For keypad & keyboard to work, install the X86 ACPI packeges. When completed installation DO NOT RESTART. Load up terminal then type: cd /Volumes/(hdd name)/Systems/Library/Extentensions, hit enter. delete all 5 GMAX files with the command: rm -rf (GMAX FILES). Reboot and complete installation. Everything works except sound, you will get a native video of 1024×768…dont worry! Download the dellpackages USE ONLY THE V1.3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Install the X1300 ONLY!!!!! follow instructions and REBOOT. You will get a black screen with a visible arrow…DONT WORRY. Reboot, press F8 the type: -x -v. Download and install the LeopardGraphicsUpdate 1.0 and install it with Pacifist. Replace all GMAX files. Reboot and have fun!!!!!! Install the sound with the DellPackages V1.3 ONLY. Use the 9205 package.

    What works?:

    Sound
    Video of 1280×800
    Airport
    Sleep

DONT NOT UPDATE TO 10.5.6!!!!!!!! The sound will not work. Everything works execpt sound.

    vodoo kernel 9.5.0
    video:GMA X3100
    chipset: Intel ICHx
audio: sigmatel 9228(didn’t worked initially but used dell post installer pack to install sigmatel 9228, fix permission and reboot, then system pref>sound>output>internal speakers n u good to go)
    ps2 fix
    Apple SMBIOS rev 27 macbook
    USB fix
wi-fi want work but download 43xx inabler file from google and run the command in terminal sudo ./downloads/brcm_43xx_inabler.sh n i’ll immediately work.
restart and ur screen will turn black after blue. tap the power button remove power cable within 5 sec and then close the display flap of laptop. then see the LED of disk till blink slowly and then open the flap.
the display should come up.viola!!!!! u’r on 10.5.6

Okay so I installed IPC OSx86 10.5.6 onto my Vostro 1500. Its running but with a keyboard and mouse attached. I can’t seem to get any patches to install. I would like to have the right graphic’s driver and have the keyboard work. Mouse I could do with out since I got my bluetooth mouse to work. Also I can’t get the sound.

    plz help me…….

  • Kandarp

@simsmt check if you installed ps2 fix properly, if not install it. Still if it wont work, remove it and check if it’s working or you can try other ps2 fixes from osx86 wiki.

@cbba00z dude, it must be stuck somewhere @ IPAC or something while booting from DVD, if that’s d issue hit ENTER and it should go on.

  • kandarp003

Rusty, you need to install X3100 from within Video drivers. Did you selected it initially? If not then juz boot from cd unselect everything (even main system,If u still have it) and juz select X3100 in customize, select the disk where your 10.5 is, and install it. If that doesn’t work either then you shoud install EFI string from iATKOS 5i. Gud luck and let me know.

  • kandarp003

cbbaooz, I got your problem. It’s not the right version you downloaded. It is iPC 10.5.6 beta. you need iPC 10.5.6 PPF Final or may google help you. Gud luck buddy.

  • Pinky Chang

Hi, yes… i would like to get leopard up and running, as well.
Unfortunately, I acquired iAtkos 5i before I read this post. However, I’d like to know where can I get iAtkos 4i? Seems like all the “4i” torrents are now dead.

I have a Vostro 1700 with the same setup as “Chang_med” with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, nVidia GeForce 8600M video graphics card, etc.

    I found the Vanilla Kernel

  • Pinky Chang

Hi, yes… i would like to get leopard up and running, as well.

Clayton, your guide really caught my eye because I’ve read about lots of successful “XPS” and “Inspiron” OS X installs, but very little as far as the “Vostro” model. Like “Chang_med” (above me), I have a Vostro 1700 with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, nVidia GeForce 8600M video graphics card, Intel Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g, etc.

I found and downloaded the Vanilla Kernel 9.4.0. (the one you used for your install). Unfortunately, I acquired iAtkos 5i before I read this post… So, I’d like to know where can I get iAtkos 4i? Seems like all the places to get “4i” have dried up and died. Also, can anyone fill me in as far as correct driver combinations for Vostro 1700 (and how I should pre-configure the BIOS settings)? Thanks. Great install guide!!!

hey everyone. ive tried just about every method to get my dell inspiron e1705 to display something other than 1024×786 resolution options. Does anyone else have a similar laptop, or maybe they found something that worked after all the normal suggested methods?

so far ive tried the GMA950 kexts, GMA3100 kexts, editing the com.apple.boot.plist settings.

    Thanks for any help!

  • kandarp

@cheng_med..Dude you’r almost there. Infact, you dont have idea that you are up and running. There is simple solution for your problem. When your Mac boot into black after blue screen..focus on your Hard drive LED, wait until it starts blinking. As you see it blinking just press Ctrl+Esc, that’s it!!! you will see your screen. Good luck.

  • http://kandarp003.wordpress.com kandarp

    Hey Cody,
Would you mind to mention your graphic card. I think i can help you.

  • ScottyCbags

    @Kandarp

I have a vostro 1400. I did a bootloader and switch method. I didn’t have any options to install the appropriate kexts.

I boot to a blue then black screen.

CTRL+ESC after hdd led stops blinking didn’t work. Any ideas?

  • ScottyCbags

    @kandarp, Nevermind.

I got 10.5.6 working but i have -f boot everytime?

  • Montanatroutbum

Can anyone tell me how to disable the front media keys on my Vostro 1500? I never use them, but I am always accidentally muting my speakers by inadvertently hitting these seriously misplaced keys. The only design flaw on an otherwise great laptop.

Hope someone can help. Figuring out how to disable these keys shouldn’t be as difficult as it’s been. No one on the Dell user forum seems to know. Someone asked this exact question 67 days ago, with zero replies.

    Thanks.

  • Edward

Did u ever get the internal wireless to work?

  • Anonymous

Unfortunately no, that was kind of the make or break for me. There was a small subproject working on drivers for it, but went nowhere.

  • Bigskytroutbum

    Clay:

These front media keys on my Vostro are making me nuts, inadvertently muting my speakers, etc.

I’ve researched this extensively, and nobody on any of the forums seems to know how to disable them. Nothing in the Dell user manual, and Dell won’t talk to me any more, now that my warranty has expired.

You’re my last hope. Please tell me how to disable these obnoxious things.

  • Anonymous

What OS? Have you checked the BIOS? I had that same problem and disabled mine, but I don’t remember how (and now I no longer have that laptop).

  • Mr. Persistence

    Clay,
I Have the same Vostro Laptop you apparently have. GM965 on a 0NX907 board with A06 Bios
Were you able to get your Internal SATA 160GB disk to recognize both MAC OS X and WINDOWS XP? MAC OS X 10.6.3. for a Dual Boot?
I am new to this. I am using Chameleon using Lifehacker’s approach.
I partitoned my Internal 160GB SATA Disk as 3 partitions (100GB-NFTS,40GB_GUID and 20GB-FAT32) I Installed Windows XP on the NFTS partition.
When I boot in Windows XP – everything works normally
When I boot in Chameleon off of my Thumb drive, I only find the Thumb Drive.
It boots to Disk Utility and sometimes finds my SATA Drive, sometimes not.
I’ve tried both settings of SATA and AHCI in BIOS.
It won’t allow me to install or format/partition the Internal SATA Drive.
When I install Externally on a 20GB Maxtor GUID attached to a USB port, the External Maxtor is found and works, but still MAC OS X doesn’t find the Internal drive in Finder.
I tried changing the AppleIntel kext but that didn’t do it.

I don’t know what RTC people refer to is, so I can’t check that.

I think I saw something about DSDT.aml needing a change, but I ‘ve lost
track since I’ve looked at so many forums trying to get this to work.

Any ideas to get my Internal SATA drive recognized and Installed would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mr. Persistence

By the way, even though I have problems with SATA right now,
    My wireless worked right away
Keypad and touch pad do not work
    I use USB keyboard
    Sound is not yet working
I haven’t gotten to working on these yet.

  • Anonymous

I’ve been out of the osx86 project for some time now, so I don’t really have an answer for you, however, there are a lot of people that visit this post and you may find support by asking one of them here in the replies.

i used the new snow leopard retail cd. i got everything working minus higher resolution and sleep

  • 417musick7

I wanted to add, iATKOS v7 10.5.7 will Boot on this LAPTOP. I had a Harddrive already running with iAtkos v7 installed on it and popped it in the dell 1500 and it booted right into OSX.
There are several patches that need to be done but this does Function with a Bare bones iATKOS v7 10.5.7
All USB ports work and Wifi Out of the box. Audio as well. Keyboard and Mouse pad and buttons all work OOB.
Video only sees 1024×768 and theres lag issues or refresh issues… There is a patch for this i read from the instructions above.

    Just FYI…
I’m looking to install the 10.6.x on it… I don’t like that iAtkos doesn’t have all Voices like Alex… I use that alot on my Real iMac to read back text… I hope one of these work like the real deal. Or atleast give me the Alex voice option.

  • 417Musick7

    ~UPDATE~
I installed another HDD that I had, a 250GB WD drive. Before I installed it, I hooked it up to my Real Intel iMac and Formated the HDD Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) After formatting with Disk Utility.app I installed it into my DELL VOSTRO 1500 1.6 Core2duo.

I Used the iATKOS v7 install Disk. I actually Downloaded=”DL’ed” for an Acer 4730Z laptop… I thought it might work for this one. I was correct, It works!
Now I’m just trying to Patch everything to get it to work right. I got the Graphics and Correct Res. working. That was an Easy Patch. The next issue is, AUDIO! I can’t seem to get it right… I followed the steps in the osx86 forums site for this dell and not sure what I’m doing wrong… Maybe I’ll get it soon.

Just thought I’d let anyone looking to Use the iATKOS v7 install disk, IT DOES WORK.
    for this Dell VOSTRO 1500.

    Good luck to all!

    PS,
I tried using iBoot and the retail Snow Leopard Disk and it runs but it gives the Error message, “YOU NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER” message… I have no idea how or what to do to get around this… I’d love to have a Full Retail Version working with Snow Leopard using my own Disk, but IDK… Anyone have any luck with Snow Leopard install on this Dell?

  • Anvesh

hi, i am using dell vostro 1015, please help me how to install apple mac

UPDATE TO EVERYONE THAT HAS A DELL or HP LAPTOP OR PC. READ THIS BEFORE YOU INSTALL LEOPARD 10.5.X

I have the Dell Vostro 1500 like the one in the guide and you want to installs hackint0sh on it, DO NOT USE THIS METHOD ANYMORE, IT’S OUT DATED. However it does work doing this method. When I used this method I used, iATKOS_v7 which is 10.5.7 which worked fine.

THE ONLY REASON I SAY DON’T USE THIS METHOD,
If you have an INTEL processor in your laptop or desktop chances are you can install SNOW LEOPARD 10.6 or Higher using the RETAIL DVD which is $30. bucks.

All you need to do is google NAWCOM myHack installer, or http://osx86.sojugarden.com/installer/

Following that method almost works on every Intel chipset.

It took about 45min to install with everything up and working and all patched. It’s not a Hacked Version of OSX it’s the Retail Disk so ALL SYSTEM FEATURES are installed and working. Including ALEX system Voice in Leopard & Snow Leopard which I use alot. Oh and all the iLIFE apps as well!

So unless you want a Hacked version of OS X don’t install anything but the Retail version of OS X…
When you own a Real Mac it’s just not the same without all of the OS intact.

    Good Luck!!!

    P.S
This guide is a Great Guide and it worked well when I used it but as with all things it’s been outdated.

  • Anonymous

    Follow the link,
    http://osx86.sojugarden.com/installer/

Install OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or 10.6.3 Retail DVD you can purchase for $30. bucks.

This is an outdated way of doing it. The retail way is much easier to do than this… It’s almost as easy as if you were doing it on a real Macintosh!
    This way is much harder.
